Jump For Heart Service Project in Physical Education

Jump Rope for Heart! February 18th- March 11th
We are proud to announce that Blake Lower School is partnering with the American Heart Association’s annual Jump Rope for Heart event as a Service Learning project in which our students can earn donations from others and give to a great cause.  We will conclude this wonderful service project on March 11th with a jump rope assembly.  We participate in this event to honor all of those affected by heart disease including George Lagerstrom (BC) who was a great inspiration to us all.   This helps us to remember how important our heart is and how important it is for us to help others in need.

Please use THIS LINK below to ensure you can sign-up for our team-

Registering on the Jump Rope for Heart website makes it easy to collect donations online.  You can set up a webpage for your child and e-mail friends/family to make secure donations.
Please register in your child's name!
All online donations must be done through the American Heart Association Jump Rope for Heart website that has been created for us.

HC Ice Skating in P.E.

Skating is a wonderful lifetime activity, and we are very fortunate to have an outdoor ice rink on which we can practice and learn. Highcroft students in grades K-5 will begin ice skating in Physical Education classes on Tuesday, January 5, 2016, provided the weather cooperates and the rink is ready. We hope to continue skating through Friday, January 29, weather permitting.

On Tuesday, January 5, be sure to send your child to school with sharp, comfortable, single-blade skates marked with your child’s name. Please check to be sure the skates fit; it is very helpful for the student to practice putting on his or her own skates over Winter Break before we begin skating on January 5. Your child will need a hat, gloves or mittens, a jacket and snow pants, skate guards or a bag to hold skates. Students in kindergarten and first grade will have a designated spot to store their skating gear near the gym. Students in second through fifth grades will need their skating equipment to be easily stored in or above their cubbies.

To be as safe as possible, all students must wear a helmet for skating. Students who do not have a helmet will not be allowed on the ice. Please adjust the helmet to fit your child before sending it to school. If your child’s ears are exposed, he or she will not be able to skate! Make sure your child comes prepared with proper ear coverage!

The Blake School has an inventory of skates and helmets on hand that you are welcome to borrow. In addition, be sure to check the Parent Association sponsored Skate and Helmet Swap boxes in the front lobby for equipment that will work for your child.
Our outdoor ice skating unit depends on winter weather. If we need to move the start or end dates for our skating unit, we will keep you informed via email and through Bear Essentials.

We eagerly look forward to a safe and pleasant outdoor month. If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch with us.

Sincerely,

LS Physical Education Teachers:

1st Grade Working it Out!

The first grade students have been working hard to solve problems cooperatively. Here they are challenged to "cross the pond" with their group using only dots as "lily pads" to stay afloat.

Cooperation Station

Students have begun the year concurring challenges that require team work, problem solving and patience. It is really paying off as we head into more group activities throughout the year.
